The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a $2 million fine to JetBlue Airways for operating chronically delayed flights on several domestic routes. The penalty is the first of its kind, as the DOT aims to crack down on airlines with unrealistic flight schedules that disrupt passengers’ travel plans.
According to the DOT, JetBlue’s delays occurred over an extended period, with flights on certain routes arriving more than 30 minutes late over 50% of the time. These routes include New York to Raleigh-Durham, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando, as well as Fort Lauderdale to Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The violations occurred between 2022 and 2023, leading the DOT to take action.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg addressed the situation, stating, “Today’s action puts the airline industry on notice that we expect their flight schedules to reflect reality.” The DOT hopes this fine will send a strong message to all airlines, emphasizing the need for greater reliability in flight scheduling and operations.
As part of the settlement, JetBlue will pay $1 million directly to the U.S. Treasury. The remaining $1 million will go toward compensating passengers who have been affected by delays. JetBlue will offer travel vouchers of at least $75 to passengers who experience flight cancellations or delays of three hours or more within the next year.
While JetBlue did not admit any liability, the airline has pushed back on the DOT’s decision, citing issues with air traffic control staffing as a contributing factor to delays. In a statement, JetBlue also highlighted its investments to improve on-time performance, particularly in congested regions like the Northeast and Florida.
This fine is part of the DOT’s broader effort to hold airlines accountable for their schedules and ensure a smoother travel experience for passengers. With stricter enforcement of on-time performance standards, the DOT hopes to reduce chronic delays and improve the overall reliability of air travel in the U.S.
